STAINED
GLASS
I would like to show you my stained glass pieces. I have made jewelry boxes of various sizes, window panels, plates and decorative vases, mirrors, candle holders, small lamps, and night lights. Reflection
of light in glass Please look around and see what I have made so far! (You can click on some of the images to enlarge them.) A word about the materials: I stopped completely using leaded solder. Unfortunately it still seems quite hard to find detailed information about the harmfulness of lead for people who purchase a piece of artwork containing lead. Lead is definitely known to be harmful to the artist when he or she breathes the fumes of lead when it gets heated, but it is also known to penetrate the skin of those who wear jewelry made of stained glass, or who touch lead in general. Knowing that little - which was enough for me to stop using lead altogether, I did some research on the web for alternatives to leaded solder. I came across a very nice webpage of an artist named Cole Sonafrank who made a few very helpful comments on lead, the harmfulness of it, and on alternatives to using it. Through his website, I found this wonderful solder which a company named Johnson in Iowa sells. It is developed at AMES Laboratory, Iowa State University. I's an alloy of copper, tin and silver, and contains less the 0.1 % lead. It is by far more expensive than the 50/50 or 40/60 solder, but for me it is absolutely worth the investment. Recently they have developed more variations of this solder. They even offer a water-soluble flux with very low toxidity. Go to Cole Sonafrank's website if you would like to read more about this new solder - and don't forget to admire his stained glass work! I enjoyed it a lot! For those of you who work with stained glass: If you are interested in this new lead-free solder, you will find all the information you need at Johnson's site. You can also call Johnson at (563) 289 5123. Enough words... just take a look at what I made and comment if you have comments! Design@CreationBijoux.biz
